Hey folks!

Steven Universe is probably my favorite cartoon on TV (rivaled by Gravity Falls for me, but these are not by any means the only two fantastic cartoons currently airing).  It has such unique themes, great action, catchy tunes, and amazing visuals all wrapped up in these quaint, subtle, quiet, 11-minute episodes, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Not that I have to.  I suspect most of you have watched at least an episode of it.

I like the idea of the Gems in formal wear, so that’s what I did here.  I admit that Pearl probably wouldn’t be quite so “glam rock meets Kate Bush,” but I’m a sucker for heavy eye makeup and dramatic shoulders (see:  every piece of art I’ve ever done, ever).  Amethyst seems like the kinda gal that would mix the edgy with the classy, and Garnet is always and forever, super regal.  Steven, of course, couldn’t be bothered to wear actual formal wear, so I put him in one of those silly tux tees.  :)

I’m preparing a few fan art pieces to sell as prints at Dragon Con - just a few, I much prefer the majority of my table to feature original work.  This is one of them!  I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you’ll consider buying a print at the show (or any I might have left over afterward).

Enjoy!

Hey folks!

My comic will exist on the web only (at least at first), so I won’t have physical copies of “Lotus For Help” to sell at Dragon Con at the end of August/beginning of September here in Atlanta.  However, I’m trying to put together a neat sketchbook full of grayscale Lotus-related musings to sell for the show.  If I manage to put it all together in time, I’d also like to sell a digital version on Gumroad.

The comic itself takes priority, but man, doing these sketches have been super fun so far.  The image above of Nicki in her mech (a proposed concept, at least) is a great example of what will be in the sketchbook.

I hope you’re looking forward to it!  Remember, the comic will post on lotusforhelp.com which is also a tumblr blog, so you can bookmark and/or follow it in anticipation of the launch of the comic on August 20.

Enjoy!

Hey folks!

Oz, Ross’s demonic boyfriend.  Doing some last-minute fiddles with his design before I start his first scene in the comic.  I want to differentiate him from Ross - their designs are entirely too similar as it stands - so I’m giving him this cute samurai bun (transforms into an edgy mohawk nicely when it needs to) and slanting his eyes a bit.  Modified his boots, too.  I feel really confident in this design.

I hope you like it, too!

Hey folks!

About a week ago, I posted this sketch.  I liked it so much that I decided to turn it into a finished piece!

I’ll be in the Dragon Con comic artists alley August 29 - September 1 here in Atlanta, and I’m very excited.  I’d like to prepare some new illustrations to sell as prints, and this will be one of them.  Anything I have left over, I’ll be selling online.

In other news, I’m still open for commissions.  Take a look if you’re interested.  :)

I hope you enjoy!

Hey folks!

Can you believe that the only character I haven’t absolutely nailed down a final design for “Lotus For Help” is Ross?  Silly, considering he used to be the titular character in the original iteration of the comic.

Because Ross doesn’t appear until page eight, I’ve been focusing on Wayne and Nicki (among other side characters that appear with them).  I’ve found even the most recent drawings of him have been difficult to keep on-model;  I’ll have one fantastic, “perfect” drawing of him and then never be able to match it for whatever reason.  How frustrating!  So I’ve worked the past few nights to try and finalize him, and I think I’ve got it, or at least I’m close.

I’m shortening his sleeves and putting him in shorts because I think it makes more sense for him to wear something that could be perceived as more comfortable, even if he’s somewhat overdressed.  Plus, it allowed me to cut out a few unnecessary details out.  Also, it’s just cute.  :)

Perfectly round or oval eyes can be difficult to get right without the help of shape tools and paths, so I’m considering giving Ross the more “football” shaped eyes that Nicki and Wayne have.  I’ve found them to be plenty expressive with the other two characters, and it will make drawing Ross a lot easier.  I’ll have to draw him a few more times to see if this is really working for me, but I’m optimistic.

As you can see, I might be changing his blue accessories (bowtie, shoes, belt) to pink, to match the design identity of the project, and because Ross is the sort of person who dresses for the job he wants and it stands to reason that he’d wear a color inspired by the lotus tree outside of the Lotus For Help headquarters.  I also think it’s more “special” than the blue, but maybe I’m crazy.  Maybe I’ll change it back.  Not quite sure yet.  What do you think?

As a side note, I’ve always had this thing where I associate characters with a specific color, even if it’s not a color they prominently wear.  In this case, I associate Nicki with light blue, Wayne with dark blue, and Ross formerly with this (frankly unprintable) electric blue color.  Perhaps the warm pink color will help differentiate him.

Anyway, I need to be in bed.  I’m up entirely too late.
