Hey folks!

Can you believe that the only character I haven’t absolutely nailed down a final design for “Lotus For Help” is Ross?  Silly, considering he used to be the titular character in the original iteration of the comic.

Because Ross doesn’t appear until page eight, I’ve been focusing on Wayne and Nicki (among other side characters that appear with them).  I’ve found even the most recent drawings of him have been difficult to keep on-model;  I’ll have one fantastic, “perfect” drawing of him and then never be able to match it for whatever reason.  How frustrating!  So I’ve worked the past few nights to try and finalize him, and I think I’ve got it, or at least I’m close.

I’m shortening his sleeves and putting him in shorts because I think it makes more sense for him to wear something that could be perceived as more comfortable, even if he’s somewhat overdressed.  Plus, it allowed me to cut out a few unnecessary details out.  Also, it’s just cute.  :)

Perfectly round or oval eyes can be difficult to get right without the help of shape tools and paths, so I’m considering giving Ross the more “football” shaped eyes that Nicki and Wayne have.  I’ve found them to be plenty expressive with the other two characters, and it will make drawing Ross a lot easier.  I’ll have to draw him a few more times to see if this is really working for me, but I’m optimistic.

As you can see, I might be changing his blue accessories (bowtie, shoes, belt) to pink, to match the design identity of the project, and because Ross is the sort of person who dresses for the job he wants and it stands to reason that he’d wear a color inspired by the lotus tree outside of the Lotus For Help headquarters.  I also think it’s more “special” than the blue, but maybe I’m crazy.  Maybe I’ll change it back.  Not quite sure yet.  What do you think?

As a side note, I’ve always had this thing where I associate characters with a specific color, even if it’s not a color they prominently wear.  In this case, I associate Nicki with light blue, Wayne with dark blue, and Ross formerly with this (frankly unprintable) electric blue color.  Perhaps the warm pink color will help differentiate him.

Anyway, I need to be in bed.  I’m up entirely too late.

Hey folks!

It has been a few weeks.  Shame on me!  I’ve had my nose buried in work, and last week, I drew hardly anything as I was preparing to move back into Atlanta proper (which happened Saturday).  The lack of drawing for a week left me surprisingly rusty, so I got back into the groove by doing this concept painting for “Lotus for Help.”  I’m not sure if summoning demons causes him physical pain or inconveniences him in some way, but I’ve toyed with the idea.

I hope you like it!

Hey folks!

This is a concept for the lotus lobby in my upcoming webcomic, “Lotus for Help.”  It serves much the same purpose as the Bobslist Adventure Team Headquarters did in “Ross Boston.”

It’s not a 100% finalized design, but it’s really close, I think.  I wanted something that looked sort of luxurious and simple, but also a little bit dingy, with this pristine diamond goddess hanging out in the pond in the middle.  The left doorway (our left) goes to Nicki’s lab, and the right doorway leads to Wayne’s wing of the building.  The pond/statue functions as an elevator to the base of the lotus tree, and goes even further down for other purposes that will remain a secret for now.

I’ve never had so much fun working on a background.  I’m learning to enjoy the process.  It’s really quite therapeutic!

Enjoy,

Hey folks!

I’ve been so busy finishing up holiday commissions (among other things) that I haven’t had a single chance this week to draw for myself.  So I threw this together.

I think readers who are familiar with the original “Ross Boston” will be surprised by some of the changes I’ve made to Ross himself for “Lotus for Help.”  He has more direction, more goals, and…well, more expressions!  If I could compile a jpeg of all of the times the poor guy has looked forlorn or scared from the original comic, it’d be a pretty big image.

Oz is Ross’s demon boyfriend.  He’s higher up in this image because he’s usually floating in the air, and it was good for the composition.  :)

Enjoy!

Hey folks!

I threw this together last night before bed.  Since demons are a huge part of “Lotus for Help” - one of the main characters, Ross, can summon them at will, though this does not denote that he has control over them - I like to consider in my free time what those demons might look like.  I want the designs to be varied, but unified.  I like the idea that the clothing they wear, if any, would not be too similar to what humans wear, and that demons have different understandings about sexuality, gender, and body comfort.  I also like to imagine that not all demons are evil, even though they feed off of that sort of energy.

This crystal demon guy here is just a concept, not something intended to show up in the first issue.  But I like him.  I had a ton of fun drawing him.  I ALWAYS have fun drawing three-eyed creatures, though.  It’s a motif I’ve always dug.

By the way, some of the brushes I used here can be found in this amazing pack by Kyle Webster.  They are super awesome, and totally worth the small amount of money he’s charging for them.  Take a look!

Anywho, enjoy!

Hey folks!

I spent pretty much all of my free time on this over the past few days.  I’ve been crazy busy with holiday commissions.  I’m thankful, but…maybe a little exhausted, too!  I tried something a bit different with the background here.  It’s not perfect, but I’m not dissatisfied.  I’ll have to put in more time to figure out the nuances of doing that sort of thing.  The backgrounds in the original comic were entirely too painstaking to justify using that method again when Lotus for Help makes its debut.

Anyway, onto business.

May your Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Yule, Flying Spaghetti Monster Feast at Olive Garden, or whatever you celebrate be filled with holiday cheer and a distinct lack of horrible ice spiders.  Happy holidays!

Hey folks!

This is Ross Boston, one of the main characters of my upcoming webcomic, “Lotus For Help” (a reboot of the former “Ross Boston”).  You can learn more about that here.

I like to imagine he’s running from some horrible demon he’s accidentally summoned or something.  That’s the kinda thing he’d do.

Enjoy!
